Sally Garrard
Position: Sports Dietitian – Apple to Zucchini Sports Nutrition
Lives: Brisbane - with the most predictable/beautiful weather, the world over!
Favourite food: Everything that’s nutritious...and delicious. A standout is Mum’s carrot cake with cream cheese frosting; so perhaps I should revise the ‘nutritious’ part.
Favourite sport: For spectating: tennis & AFL. For competing: anything repetitive – running, rowing, cycling. I steer WELL clear of any ball sports. Hand-eye co-ordination is not a strong point.
Briefly tell us about yourself. How did you become a sports dietitian? I started lightweight rowing in 2000, and took myself off to see Kerry Leech – as she was who ‘everyone in Brisbane’ went to. So Kerry was definitely my inspiration. I only did a short stint in lighty rowing, and quickly transitioned to the world of triathlon, where I now float in & out of overuse injuries. I find training to be a great social outlet – and so most holidays are based around a triathlon/marathon. In my working life, I run my own private practice (from The ‘Gabba & West End in Brisbane) – and mostly see athletes that are into endurance sports & rowing.
What other areas of dietetics are you interested in? Vegetarian & sustainable eating, gut intolerances and eating disorders.
Why did you become involved with SDA? I love the support that the SDA team brings, and the enthusiasm of a sports dietitian is contagious.
Which sportsperson (or team) do you admire the most and why? Roger Federer. His physical & mental commitment to the game is unwavering. He also appreciates good coffee; I appreciate that.
