Caffeine occurs naturally in the leaves, nuts and seeds of approximately 60 different plants and is socially accepted and available around the world.

Since the 1970’s, athletes have experimented with caffeine to enhance physical performance in sport and over the decades, sports science has started to understand the widespread benefits of caffeine and its use in a multitude of different sports and events. Having spent some time on the WADA Prohibited List (removed in January 2004), the addition of caffeine (or guarana) to ‘energy drinks’, confectionery and sports foods/supplements within the past 10 years has increased the opportunities for athletes to consume caffeine, either as part of their everyday diet or for specific use as an ergogenic aid.
