Tell us about yourself, Anthony. How did you become a sports dietitian?
I became involved with SDA in South Australia once I graduated as a Dietitian. I have a background in exercise physiology and have always been sports-mad so it was a natural progression. I completed the SDA / AIS Sports Nutrition Further Education Course in 1999 and have continued to be involved with SDA, SDASA and SMASA.
What other areas of dietetics are you interested in?
Clinically I am working as a Renal Dietitian which has some overlap with sports nutrition especially getting dialysis patients to exercise.
I started out attending SDASA meetings then took on greater responsibilities within SDASA. In 2000 I was elected to the SDA Board and progressed to President in 2006-7. I continue to represent SDA on sports medicine and science conference organising committees. Do you participate in any sport yourself?
Yes. I compete in the triathlon but would do better if I could swim a little better. For 20 years I umpired football but have given that away to prepare for some marathons.
Which sportsperson (or team) do you admire the most and why?
My all time favourite sporting moment was seeing Kieren Perkins win gold in the 1500m at Atlanta. However I think the achievements of some of the recreational athletes I deal with are potentially just as inspiring.
