Issue 10 - Let's Get Ready to Rumble into AFL Season 2009
Nutrition E-Bites Edition 10 March 2009
In the city of Melbourne, if you don't follow AFL, you're regarded as something other than human Well, perhaps not. But for the young hopeful that turns up for training on those frost-bitten winter mornings at Auskick, or the religious footy-goer who lines up for hours to get 'footy food' in the midst of the game, it is definitely time to get excited because footy is back!! And while 'footy food' (the buffet of pies, beer, chips and hot dogs on offer) is as much a part of the AFL culture as, let's say, Sam Newman, it is not ideal footy fuel for budding young guns through to players at a senior level. The "spare tyre" can become a problem and even if it isn't, there are much better fuelling options to get the most out of your game. Want to read on? SDA have just launched their new AFL fact sheet, as part of the Food for your Sport series. Click here to access the fact sheet as a webpage or to download the printable fact sheet in PDF format. You have trained hard, you are mentally focused, well-fuelled and are now at your peak. But there are still two things that can stop you dead in your tracks: the cramp and the stitch. Does this sound familiar? Unfortunately, if unmanaged or unresolved, they will over-ride all mental and physical training and sports performance will suffer. For cutting edge information on managing cramps and stitches, click here to access the webpage or to get a printable handout. Are you interested in learning more about general sports nutrition and how it can affect fitness, health and performance? Do you have clients or athletes asking you nutrition-related questions? SDA is pleased to present a one-day professional development opportunity, which is tailored specifically to meet the needs of personal trainers, school sport coaches, athletes, health and physical education teachers and anyone else interested in nutrition for the active person. Click here for more information or dates and locations in 2009. Recovery is an important part of any nutrition plan, especially in AFL football when a tough game finishes late at night, only to have to front up for recovery and training the next morning, or if training after school.
