Comment:

Purpose/features: Bicarbonate loading may help to increase the muscle's ability to buffer and dispose of excess hydrogen ions produced through anaerobic glycolysis. By reducing the build up of hydrogen ions in the blood during high intensity exercise, changes in intracellular pH are delayed thereby allowing more work to be performed before fatigue sets in.

Form: 840mg capsules

Situations for use: athletes competing in high-intensity events which require energy supply predominantly by anaerobic glycolysis (events lasting approximately 2 - 6 minutes)

Legality:  Sodium bicarbonate is a legal supplement.

Note: Sodium bicarbonate will adjust the pH of urine to make it more alkaline, therefore may have implications with regards to post event drug testing (see Considerations below).

Doses: 0.3g/kg body mass

Specific capsule, food and water ingestion protocols should be carried out during dosage period. Contact a dietitian or sports scientist for further details on these protocols. Administration should be under close supervision.

Suitable for:

Elite level athletes performing at the highest level in their sport with sound nutritional management and work closely with dietitians/sports scientists.

Considerations

• Gastrointestinal upset may occur with some athletes. To avoid gastrointestinal upset, ensure that the protocols set out by your dietitian/sports scientist are closely adhered to.
• The effect of sodium bicarbonate ingestion on urinary pH levels may prolong the process of post event drug testing. Due to the urine becoming more alkaline, the first urine samples may not be accepted.  Consult your dietitian/sports scientist for more details.
