Issue 14 - Swimming & Soccer
Nutrition E-Bites Edition 14 July 2009
Get the speed on swimming…
With the FINA World Championships on in Rome at this passing moment, swimming is the flavourof the month. Nutrition has a cemented role in the sport due to not only the hours of dedicated training, but also due to the demands of growth and development in swimmers during years of competition and physique requirements. Swimming at a club level requires training outside of school hours, usually before and after school, so planning healthy snacks to munch on in the car and packing the esky for poolside snacks are just a few handy tips to keep your gun swimmer fuelled and ready to go.

The A-League kicks off again for 2009
Though it is hard to believe if you live in Aussie-Rules-Melbourne, soccer (or football as it is known around the world) is the most popular sport in the world, with over 120 million amateur players worldwide. It is a game involving sudden sprints and bursts of energy rather than continuous moderate-intensity running, but in a typical match, soccer players at elite level can cover up to 10-11 kilometres at a fairly modest speed, sprint for about 800-1200 metres, accelerate 40-60 different times, and change direction every five seconds or so.Hydration can be a challenge, as there are very limited opportunities to drink once the whistle is blown and for midfielders and wing players (who can run up to 14km per game) to last the distance, muscle fuel is key.
