Program

This is a three-stage workshop including the following:

Stage 1: Pre-Workshop Preparation Theoretical background.

Mandatory pre learning reading that must be completed for stages 1 and 2. Please allow sufficient time for this to be completed, we suggest 2 weeks with a total of 4 hours. Post-activity questions will be forwarded to participant, to informally assess knowledge and understanding in preparation for Stage 2.

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Describe the different gastrointestinal symptoms experienced by individuals participating in sport and exercise, including the degree of incidence and severity.
  • Explain the concept of exercise-induced gastrointestinal syndrome (exercise-associated perturbations to gastrointestinal integrity, function, and systemic responses), and the associated acute and chronic health implication.
  • Describe the key extrinsic and intrinsic factors that exacerbate exercise-associated perturbations to gastrointestinal status.
  • Summarise the current evidence-based prevention and management strategies for exercise-associated gastrointestinal perturbations and symptoms.
  • Evaluate the efficacy of prevention and management strategies in the professional practice setting.

Stage 2: Case-Study Workshop (Application to professional practice)

Four hours face-to-face case-study workshop based on Stage 1 learning task.

Program and content developed by international leader (practitioner and research) in the field; Dr Ricardo Costa from the Department of Nutrition Dietetic & Food, Monash University.

Face-to-face delivery facilitated by Dr Ricardo Costa and Stephanie Gaskell (AdvSD and exercise gastroenterology practitioner and researcher.

Learning outcomes:

  • Describe the basic components of gut health in athletes.
  • Describe and develop a standard and tailored gastrointestinal assessment protocol during exercise aimed at determining causal mechanism(s) of exercise-associated gastrointestinal perturbations and symptoms. 
  • Interpret and explain data outcome of a gastrointestinal assessment protocol during exercise.
  • Provide rationale and justification for appropriate interventional strategies to prevent and/or manage exercise-associated gastrointestinal perturbation and symptoms.

*Stage 3: Optional Practical laboratory session- gastrointestinal assessment procedures during exercise. Registrations will not be made with SDA but with Dr Ricardo Costa at ricardo.costa@monash.edu to secure your place.

Friday June 28th– at Monash University, Department of Nutrition Dietetic & Food, Monash University

2 x sessions (AM & PM at 4hours duration) 1 x PM session (4 hours duration)

Registrations will be capped at 16 people per session.

Session activities- Perform a gastrointestinal assessment protocol during exercise in a group setting.

This will Include:

  • Measuring physiological strain markers during endurance exercise
  • Measuring blood glucose and lactate responses
  • Carbohydrate and fat oxidation rates
  • Breath sample collection and analysis
  • Hydration status and hydration change markers
  • Application of validated and reliability tested gastrointestinal symptoms and feeding tolerance assessment tool
  • Explain other markers for determining gastrointestinal integrity and function, and systemic responses
  • Interpret and discuss data outcomes
  • Application in data based intervention
  • Athlete report development

This will include:
